Champlain College Saint-Lambert and the Cavaliers Sports Hall of Fame are proud to announce its newest members for 2012. Being inducted in 2012 are:
Amy Walsh – Women’s Soccer (Athlete)
Class of 1996
Amy played both Women’s Basketball and Soccer at Champlain, where she was named Most Improved Player in Women’s Basketball in 1995 and Most Valuable Player in Women’s Soccer in 1996. She was also named Female Athlete of the Year in her senior year and graduated in 1996. Amy led the Women’s Soccer team to an FQSE Silver medal in 1995-96 and was a true leader on the team – always working hard and giving her best. Upon graduating, Amy played at both the CIAU (McGill) and NCAA (Nebraska) levels in soccer, and she was a member of Canada’s National team from 1998-2002 and from 2005-2009. Amy participated in the Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2007 and in the 2008 Summer Olympics as part of Team Canada.
Sharon Sandy – Women’s Basketball (Athlete)
Class of 1989
Sharon attended Champlain from 1987 to 1989 and was a key component on the Cavaliers “AA” Women’s Basketball team during that time. Her tremendous work ethic, competitive nature and determination, combined with a great sense of humor, made her a natural leader on the team. Sharon is one of the few players who’ve gone on to play and excel at the CIAU level from “AA” basketball. After graduating from Champlain, she played at Concordia where she was named to the FQSE 1st All-Star teams in 1994 and 1995. Sharon played professional women’s basketball in Switzerland and Europe. Sharon is currently still involved with Basketball as the Head Coach of the Dawson Blues Women’s team in Division 2.
Gabriel Gervais – Men’s Soccer (Athlete)
Class of 1995
“Gabby” played for the Cavaliers from 1993-1995 and he helped bring the Cavaliers to the forefront of the men’s soccer scene in Quebec and Canada. His attention to detail and ability to read the situation made him a tremendous player. Gabriel was named a CCAA All-Canadian during the 1995 season. After finishing at Champlain, he went on to play in the CIAU (McGill), NCAA (Syracuse). Gabby also represented Canada on the Canadaian World Cup Team from 2004-08 and has 12 caps. He played for the Montreal Impact for seven seasons and was named USL D1 Defender of the year in 2003, 2004 and 2006. He is now working Deloitte as a manager in Supply Chain Management Consulting.
2007 Men’s Soccer Team (Team)
This edition of the Cavaliers Men’s Soccer team is the only team to have captured a National Championship Gold medal for the college, and to this day is the only Gold medal that Quebec has won at the National level in Men’s Soccer. After taking the silver at the Nationals in 2006, the Cavaliers came back in 2007 and had a 5-3 season. They won the provincials and moved on to the CCAA Nationals in Halifax. After winning their first two games, the Cavaliers went up against Algonquin College, but the game was stopped after 45 minutes due to snow. The following week, on a neutral site, the Cavaliers came out strong and won the game in penalty kicks after tying the match up in extra time.
Established in 2009, The Champlain Cavaliers Hall of Fame recognizes student-athletes, teams, coaches and builders whose contributions have brought much distinction and honor to Champlain College Saint-Lambert and have established a tradition of excellence which is incomparable. Their achievements have touched everyone associated with the Cavaliers community. From the inception of intercollegiate athletics at Champlain to the present, none have better exemplified the true spirit of athletic competition at the CEGEP level than these honored student-athletes, coaches, teams and builders.
The latest class of inductees will join Dr. John Jones, who was inducted in 2010 in the Builder category for his dedication to Rugby, in the Cavaliers Sports Hall of Fame. The inductions will take place on Tuesday, April 17th, at the Sandman Hotel, during the annual Cavaliers’ Awards Banquet.
