0440_049The past weekend proved to be a watershed moment for basketball at Champlain College Saint-Lambert. In addition to the men capturing their 4th Provincial title – 2nd in 3 years – the women’s team demonstrated that they are now a major player in the Quebec college league by capturing their first ever Provincial medal at this past weekend’s RSEQ Division 1 championships in Laval.

The Cavaliers, led by Head Coach Georges Germanos,  finished their regular season in 4th place, with a 9-7 record. Having had a challenging season due to injuries to key players, the team still managed to end the year with a solid record and in the play-offs for the 4th consecutive season. After taking their mid-week quarter-final game against Trois-Rivières handily (81-64) the ladies were set to play defending provincial and national champions, Montmorency in the semi-finals.

0440_030Facing les Nomades in their home gym proved to be too much for the Cavaliers, although they did a great job of keeping the game close and playing hard. The Cavaliers fell in the semi-finals by a score of  42-56 and now they needed to prep for the Bronze medal game the following day against Dawson. The ladies had lost both their regular season games to the 2nd seeded Blues and they were looking for payback.

The team came out hard in the Bronze medal game, exchanging baskets with Dawson and by the end of the 1st quarter, the Cavaliers were up 17-11. The ladies did not ease up the pressure, extending their lead to 14 points at the half and they never looked back. The Cavaliers had their first ever Division 1 medal for women’s basketball with their 63-38 win over Dawson. The team had an amazing 71 rebounds, led by Player of the Game, Sirah Diarra (15 points, 18 rebounds), Metchline Gabelus  (14 points, 3 rebounds) and Clara Dagenais (12 points, 11 rebounds).

Congratulations to all team members, coaches and staff! Thank you for a memorable and outstanding season.
