The Champlain Cavaliers football team started their 2014 season on a positive note when they faced the Lauréats du CEGEP de St-Hyacinthe in their home opener on Friday August 29th.
The Cavaliers came out strong at the beginning of the game taking a quick lead of 28-0 in the first quarter, result of a 102-yard pass to Troy Trench and an interception returned for a TD by newcomer Samuel Lagloire-O’Connell from Quebec City. Another first was an interception also returned for a TD by rookie Charles Davidson-Parent, his first career TD.
The game saw the return to the field of Alex Meijer who performed very well with 6 tackles – 4 leading to loss of yards for tackles for St-Hyacinthe. The defense looked solid, allowing only 56 yards of total offense to their opposition. A total of 5 interceptions were made by the Cavaliers defense – 2 returned back for touchdowns.
On offense, the quaterbck tandem of Daniel Lazzara and Houston Jones combined for over 200 yards passing with only 4 incompletes. The offense generated 337 yards of total offense. Trench had 119 yards receiving and 34 yards on the ground with 2 majors, while Sam Collette finished his day with 45 yards on 3 catches.
The team is back on the practice field as they prepare for their next game, Saturday September 6th, against Ahuntsic at Parc Villeray in Montreal.
