fb_sth_wp1It was the long awaited game – the follow-up to the 34-33 thriller from last October – and it did not disappoint. The second game of the season for both teams was a high stakes one, with St-Jérôme hoping to regain their winning ways, and Champlain wanting to stay unbeaten.

The game started off with the Cavaliers making an offensive turnover their own territory, allowing St-Jerome to take an early 7-0 lead with only 3:05 played in the game. Despite the bad start, Champlain fought back, starting with a superb 35-yard field goal by kicker Jérome Arsenault. Saint-Lambert continued the comeback with the defence forcing turnovers, and the offense capitalizing the plays. Daniel Lazzara hooked up with Maxime Giroux in the end-zone for a 13-yard touchdown, putting the Cavaliers up 10-7 halfway through the second quarter. The Cavs continued their push by adding another touchdown before half-time, scored by Daniel Lazzara, on the ground this time, making the score at half-time 17-7.

The offense continued for Champlain as the 2nd-half started, with Cavs receiver Samuel Collette running a superb comeback pattern, putting Champlain up by three scores, 24-7. Interceptions by linebackers Dalton English and Jarek Richards and defensive back Tommy Roadley proved to be too much for St-Jérôme to overcome. They managed to add in a touchdown, but did not make the 2-pt convert, while the Cavaliers added a single, to make the final score 25-13.

The win moves the Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers to 2-0, while Les Cheminots fall to 0-2. Collette was not the only receiver to shine. Giroux finished with 5 catches for 52 yards, while Benjamin Pearson (rookie out of St-Pat’s Irish) and Conor Sinclair, (rookie out of Greenfield Park) both had spectacular catches to keep drives alive. Receiver coach J.C. Mercille commented on his squad’s performance by saying, “Our guys applied the game plan ‘to a T’ and made the big catches when we needed them. They also really helped out run support with some key blocks”.

The Cavaliers host the Outaouais Griffons in their next game on Saturday, September 12th. Kick-off is at 7:00 PM at Seaway Park 3 in St-Lambert.
