Champlain Cavaliers > Cavaliers News > Cavaliers Basketball Teams Heading to Provincials
As the 2012-13 RSEQ Division 1 College Basketball season entered its final weekend of regular season play, both Cavalier team were on the road at John Abbott looking for key victories, albeit for different reasons. The women were fighting for the last play-off spot, as they prepared for their last game of the year and the men were attempting to lock up 1st place and a bye into the semi-finals.

Women’s Basketball
Champlain 80 – John Abbott 47
The Cavaliers needed to win their game against the Islanders while depending on Edouard-Montpetit to defeat Trois-Rivieres to lock up the 6th play-off spot. The ladies got off to a slow start, but they managed to stay ahead of John Abbott in the first quarter and went on to control the game. With a clear size advantage, the Cavaliers out rebounded their opponents 51-35 while being led by Jessica Fequiere (22 pts, 14 rebounds) and Jennifer Mathurin (18 pts, 13 rebounds). Two other Cavaliers scored in double digits – Kathleen Belanger-Finn (11 pts) and Jeanne Gaumont (14 pts). After capturing the victory, the team then had to wait for the Trois-Rivieres / Edourad result, which, after a very tight game, went the Cavaliers’ way. Edouard’s 2-point win allowed the Cavaliers to move ahead into the 6th and final spot (credit heather). The team will now play in the RSEQ 1/4-finals on Friday, March 1, and while they are the lower ranked team, they will have a home court advantage as Champlain is hosting these Championships.

Men’s Basketball
Champlain 66 – John Abbott 57
The Cavaliers were looking to do two things as they headed out to John Abbott: end their 3 game losing streak and lock-up 1st place. With a close game against a gritty John Abbott squad, the team stepped up. Although it seemed like a back and forth affair, the Cavaliers never relinquished the lead during the game. Strong 1st and 3rd quarters helped the team as did better work on the glass. Alex Paquin had a big night, scoring 24 points (4/6 from 3-pt range), as did David Belanger (15 pts, 11 rebounds). The Cavaliers will play on Sunday at 1:00 PM against Ste-Foy at Champlain and they will wait to see who they will play in the semi-finals on Saturday, March 2 at 2:20 PM.
