Champlain Cavaliers > Cavaliers News > Basketball Teams Headed to Provincial Semi-Finals

For the first time since 2015, both Cavalier Basketball teams have advanced to the RSEQ D1 Provincial Championships which are being held at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal on March 2nd and 3rd. Both teams advanced through their 1/4-Final wins on Tuesday night in a packed Champlain Gym.

In the Women’s game, the #4 ranked Cavaliers were in tough during the 1st half against  #5 seeded Vanier, with the score tied at 33-33. The second half saw the Cavaliers turn it on offensively with the team outscoring Vanier 22-8. While Vanier managed to keep pressure up late in the 4th, going on a 13-2 run, it was too little, too late. The Cavaliers ended up taking the game by a final of 73-60 and locking in their spot in the semi-finals against the #1 seeded Dynamiques de Ste-Foy. Top scorer for the Cavaliers was 2nd year student and 2019 RSEQ 1st Team All-Star Misenga Muteba who had 24 points, 16 rebounds and 2 blocks.

The Men were up against South Shore rivals Édouard-Montpetit who has taken both regular season games from the Cavaliers. With an electric atmosphere, and fans from both schools in attendance. the Cavaliers jumped out to 20-2 lead after a 20 point run. The Cavs held the lead in to the half, up 43-22 and looking to be in control of the match.

The Cavs looked to come out strong in the 3rd but their lead was cut down to 10 by the end of the 3rd due to aggressive and effective shooting by the Lynx. The 4th quarter saw the Lynx pull to with 4 of the Cavaliers with less than a minute to play, but the Cavaliers scored on a couple of key possessions and made two critical stops. Once the dust had settled, the Cavaliers were able to hold on and take the win by a score of 75-68. The win puts the Cavaliers back into the semis and up against the Vanier Cheetahs, who have had a perfect 16-0 season this year. The Cavaliers were led by 3rd year senior, Ali Elzein, who had 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

The RSEQ D1 Basketball Championships are being held at Brébeuf College on March 2nd and 3rd. The women will play their semi-final on Saturday, March 2nd at 12:00 PM while the men will tip-off at 4:30 PM. Tickets are $10.00 with a student entry being $5.00.
